There’s a moment in every major technological shift where you can feel the ground moving under your feet. Not metaphorically, actually feel it, in the pit of your stomach, somewhere between excitement and the creeping suspicion that everything you thought you knew is about to need a second look.

We’re in one of those moments right now.

Artificial intelligence isn’t coming to cybersecurity. It’s already here, already embedded in the tools we use, the attacks we defend against, and the threat landscape we try to make sense of every day. The question isn’t whether AI will change security. It already has. The question is whether we’re paying close enough attention to navigate it well.

I’m cautiously optimistic. Emphasis, some days, on the cautious.

The Attacker Got Here First

Let’s be honest about something uncomfortable: when a powerful new technology arrives, offense tends to figure it out before defense does. AI is no exception.

Phishing used to be easy to spot. The grammatical errors, the awkward phrasing, the inexplicable urgency about your account being “suspeneded.” You could almost hear the scam radiating off the page. That era is over. Large language models can now produce phishing emails indistinguishable from legitimate corporate communication: personalized, contextually accurate, professionally written, and generated at industrial scale. The old advice of “look for spelling mistakes” is not just outdated; it’s actively dangerous, because it creates false confidence.

Deepfakes have moved from a novelty to a genuine attack vector. Executives are being impersonated on video calls. Voice cloning is being used to defeat MFA flows that rely on voice recognition. In 2024, a finance employee at a multinational firm was tricked into transferring $25 million after a deepfake video call appeared to show his CFO authorizing the transfer. This is not science fiction. This is a Tuesday.

AI also accelerates malware development. Attackers are using LLMs to write and iterate on malicious code faster than before, to find vulnerabilities in open-source software, and to automate the reconnaissance phase of attacks: scraping, correlating, and profiling targets at a speed no human team could match.

But Defenders Got Better Tools Too

Here’s where the cautious optimism kicks in.

AI is also the most significant force multiplier defenders have seen in a long time. The same capabilities that make attacks harder to spot make detection and response faster, smarter, and more scalable.

Modern SIEM platforms are increasingly AI-native. Instead of writing hundreds of static correlation rules and praying your adversary doesn’t color outside the lines, AI-powered detection can identify anomalous behavior patterns across enormous volumes of data; the kind of subtle, slow-burn lateral movement that a rule-based system would never catch, because it was never specifically programmed to look for it. The signal emerges from the noise because the model has learned what normal looks like, not because someone anticipated every possible abnormality in advance.

Automation is closing response time gaps that used to be measured in hours or days. AI-assisted triage can sort a flood of alerts, surface the ones that actually need human attention, and even suggest or execute initial containment steps, all before a human analyst has finished their first coffee. For teams that are perpetually understaffed and overwhelmed (which is to say, most teams), this isn’t a nice-to-have. It’s a lifeline.

Threat intelligence is getting smarter too. AI can correlate indicators across massive datasets, identify campaign patterns, and connect dots between seemingly unrelated incidents at a speed that changes the tempo of threat hunting entirely. What used to take an experienced analyst a week of painstaking work can now be surfaced in minutes as a hypothesis to investigate.

None of this means the humans go home. It means the humans can focus on the problems that actually require human judgment; context, nuance, the messy edge cases that no model handles perfectly. That’s a better use of everyone involved.

The Skills Gap Just Got More Complicated

Here’s the part nobody loves to talk about: the security industry already had a significant skills gap before AI arrived and decided to make everything more interesting.

AI doesn’t close that gap. It reshapes it.

The practitioner who thrives in this environment isn’t necessarily the one who can hand-code a neural network from scratch. It’s the one who understands what AI tools can and can’t do, who can interpret their outputs critically, who knows when to trust the model and when to override it, and who can ask the right questions of systems that sometimes present confident-sounding answers to the wrong problem.

This is actually a familiar skill set in security. We’ve always had to work with imperfect information, noisy data, and tools that generate both insights and false positives in roughly equal measure. AI amplifies that dynamic more than it changes it.

That said, keeping up requires active effort. A few things that are genuinely worth your time:

Learn the threat side first. Understanding how attackers are using AI: prompt injection, model poisoning, AI-generated social engineering; makes you a better defender and a more credible voice in conversations about risk. You can’t defend against what you haven’t thought about.

Get hands-on with the tools. Most major security platforms are shipping AI features right now. Experiment with them. Understand what they’re actually doing under the hood, even at a conceptual level. “It uses machine learning” is not a sufficient explanation for a detection that fires on production.

Follow the research. MITRE, academic institutions, and organizations like the AI Security Center are actively publishing frameworks and guidance for this space. It’s moving fast, but the signal-to-noise ratio in the research literature is better than in the vendor marketing materials. Shocking, I know.

Build with skepticism. AI tools make mistakes. They hallucinate. They’re confidently wrong in ways that static tools never are, because static tools don’t fake certainty. Build workflows that treat AI output as a starting point for human judgment, not a final answer.

Privacy, Ethics, and the Questions We Should Be Asking

I’d be doing this topic a disservice if I didn’t spend a moment here, because the ethical dimension of AI in security is genuinely thorny and often glossed over in the rush to deploy.

AI-powered security tools work by analyzing behavior and behavior means data about people. User activity logs, communication patterns, access records, anomaly profiles. The same capabilities that make AI detection powerful also create surveillance infrastructure of remarkable breadth and depth, often operating inside organizations whose employees have little visibility into how extensively they’re being monitored.

This isn’t hypothetical. It’s already the case in many enterprises today. The question of where legitimate security monitoring ends and invasive surveillance begins is not a technical question. It’s an ethical and organizational one, and the technology is advancing much faster than the policies governing its use.

There’s also the question of bias. AI models trained on historical data inherit the biases in that data. In security, that can mean anomaly detection that flags certain user populations disproportionately, or threat models that reflect the threat landscape of the past rather than the present. A model that learned what “normal” looks like from five years of data may encode assumptions that are no longer valid or that were never equitable to begin with.

And then there’s accountability. When an AI system makes a decision; flags an account, triggers an automated block, quarantines a device. Who is responsible for that decision? How do you explain it to the affected user? How do you audit it? How do you know when the model is wrong in systematic ways that no individual incident would reveal?

These are not reasons to avoid AI. They’re reasons to deploy it thoughtfully, with governance structures that treat the ethical questions as seriously as the technical ones. Which, in the security industry, requires some deliberate effort. We tend to be better at the technical questions.

What the Future Probably Looks Like

Predicting the future in technology is a good way to be confidently wrong in print, so I’ll offer this less as a forecast and more as a set of trends worth watching.

The arms race between AI-powered offense and AI-powered defense will intensify. Both sides have access to the same underlying capabilities. The advantage will go to whoever learns faster, deploys smarter, and makes fewer unforced errors. That sounds obvious, but it’s a meaningful shift from an era when defenders had structural advantages that didn’t depend on outpacing the adversary’s R&D cycle.

The role of the security analyst will keep evolving. The analyst of five years from now will spend less time on alert triage and more time on judgment calls that require context, creativity, and ethical reasoning, the things AI does poorly. This is, genuinely, a more interesting job. It’s also one that requires broader skills, not just technical depth.

Regulation will arrive, eventually, in its usual ungainly fashion. The EU AI Act is already shaping how AI systems are developed and deployed in Europe. Similar frameworks will emerge elsewhere. Security teams will need to understand compliance requirements for AI systems, not just the AI capabilities themselves.

And the organizations that do this well; that integrate AI thoughtfully, govern it seriously, and keep humans meaningfully in the loop; will have a real advantage over those that either resist it entirely or deploy it recklessly. The gap between those two groups is going to widen.

Staying Upright on Moving Ground

Here’s the thing about ground that’s moving under your feet: you don’t have to stop it. You just have to learn to keep your balance.

AI in security is not a problem to be solved or a threat to be neutralized. It’s a condition of the environment we’re now operating in, for better and worse simultaneously. The tools are powerful and getting more so. The risks are real and getting more sophisticated. The ethical questions are serious and largely unanswered.

The right response isn’t panic, and it isn’t uncritical enthusiasm. It’s the same thing good security has always required: clear-eyed assessment of the actual landscape, willingness to adapt, healthy skepticism toward anything that promises to be a silver bullet, and enough humility to keep learning when the ground shifts again.

Which it will. Probably next quarter.
